Helion is a fusion power company on a mission to build the world's first commercial fusion power plant. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Everett, WA, the company has raised $1.5 billion from top-tier investors including Sam Altman, SoftBank, and Thrive Capital. Helion's prototype, Polaris, has achieved record-breaking plasma temperatures of 150 million degrees Celsius, and the team is advancing toward Orion, their first commercial fusion generator. As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Vacuum Systems, you will own the design and development of novel high-vacuum systems critical to Helion's pulsed fusion generators. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Mechanical Engineering, you will drive complete system definition from requirements derivation and conceptual design through component selection, analysis, and hardware commissioning. Your responsibilities include performing multidisciplinary engineering analysis using both in-house and external tools, conducting design reviews, and iterating designs to achieve full functionality. You will work hands-on with experienced technicians to implement your hardware designs and troubleshoot issues as they arise during integrated testing on fusion generators. Cross-functional collaboration is essential—you'll negotiate interfaces with other fusion generator subsystems and learn from domain experts to expand your engineering skillset. This role demands ownership, urgency, and a commitment to solving hard problems that have never been solved before. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering and 3+ years of professional experience delivering full-scope engineering projects with schedule ownership. You should have hands-on exposure to multiple engineering disciplines (fluids, mechanical, controls), strong first-principles thinking, and proficiency with CAD software such as NX or Solidworks. This is an onsite role in Everett, WA.
