Impulse is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the Vehicle Engineering Team, responsible for the design, build, test, analysis, and integration of spacecraft hardware. You will own all aspects of hardware development from concept through launch and orbital maneuvers, working with cross-functional engineering teams including propulsion, electrical, software, and controls subsystems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own cradle-to-grave development of primary and secondary structures and critical space mechanisms
- Establish driving loads and develop efficient structural designs using first principles to inform critical architecture decisions
- Perform and document analysis including hand calculations, finite element analysis, and kinematic analysis to support design intent
- Identify, specify, and source commercial components to support design requirements
- Incorporate manufacturing trades into conceptual design, exploring machined, formed, welded, composite, and other construction methods
- Project manage hardware maturity across stakeholders and adjacent contributors, ensuring system integration and validating assumptions
- Communicate effectively with adjacent design teams to ensure all subsystems account for and support hardware assumptions
- Produce engineering drawings with required specifications for manufacturing
- Generate test plans and provide direct support for structural qualification and acceptance testing
- Work with internal manufacturing and external sources to procure materials, fabricate parts, and complete assemblies
- Update designs and documentation to support continuous improvement
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience in mechanical design
- Demonstrated proficiency in CAD software with ability to learn new tools
- Demonstrated ability to model complex shapes including lofting and surfacing
- Demonstrated ability in conceptual design, fabrication, and testing of hardware
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively across different teams
- Ability to communicate technical challenges, explain rationale, and resolve concerns
