Salary: USD 144,000 - 177,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Mechanical Engineer II to join the Spacecraft Structures & Missions team. This role owns the mechanical execution of assigned missions end-to-end, from requirements and design through build, integration, environmental test, and launch vehicle delivery.
Key responsibilities include tailoring Muon's platform components to mission-specific needs and designing new mission-specific components and payload accommodations. You will create and manage spacecraft-level mechanical assemblies in SolidWorks, including envelopes, interfaces, and configuration control. The role requires performing first-order structural and thermal sizing to guide designs, partnering with dedicated structural and thermal analysis groups for detailed analysis.
You will produce and release engineering documentation including drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and tolerance/mass budgets through ECO/DCO processes. Support for environmental test campaigns (vibration, TVAC) and spacecraft integration alongside production and test teams is essential. Additional duties include writing build procedures, supporting hardware assembly and integration on the floor, and presenting work in design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR) while coordinating across systems, thermal, avionics, and payload teams.
Required qualifications include 5+ years of experience designing, building, and testing mechanical hardware for complex systems, with demonstrated ability to take hardware from concept through build and test. You must have structural analysis fundamentals including hand calculations, margin assessment, and FEA familiarity. Proficiency in CAD for medium-to-large assembly design (SolidWorks preferred) and solid command of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and tolerance/mass budgets are essential. A B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required.
Nice-to-have skills include space industry experience with spacecraft or flight hardware, environmental test campaign experience, hands-on FEA experience (FEMAP/NASTRAN, ANSYS), PLM systems and formal change control experience, deployable hardware or precision mechanisms experience, and software skills in Python or MATLAB.
The position is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in San Jose, CA.
