Impulse is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to join the Vehicle Engineering Team, responsible for the design, build, test, and integration of advanced propulsion space vehicle hardware. This is a cradle-to-grave ownership role covering primary and secondary structures and critical space mechanisms. Key responsibilities include: - Own all aspects of hardware development from concept through launch and orbital maneuvers - Develop comprehensive roadmaps for hardware maturity and execution - Establish driving loads and design efficient structures using first-principles analysis to inform critical architecture decisions - Perform and document structural analysis including hand calculations, finite element analysis (FEA), and kinematic analysis - Identify, specify, and source commercial components aligned with design intent - Incorporate manufacturing trades into conceptual design, exploring machined, formed, welded, composite, and alternative construction methods - Project manage hardware maturity across stakeholders and adjacent contributors, ensuring cross-functional alignment - Communicate effectively with propulsion, electrical, software, and controls subsystems to validate assumptions and dependencies - Produce detailed engineering drawings with manufacturing specifications - Generate test plans and provide direct support for structural qualification and acceptance testing - Collaborate with internal manufacturing and external suppliers for procurement, fabrication, and assembly - Drive continuous improvement through design updates and documentation refinement Required qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field - 3+ years of demonstrated mechanical design experience - Proficiency in CAD software with ability to learn new tools - Demonstrated ability to model complex shapes including lofting and surfacing - Experience in conceptual design, fabrication, and hardware testing - Strong collaborative skills across cross-functional teams - Ability to communicate technical challenges, explain design rationale, and resolve concerns
