xAI is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join its datacenter engineering team, responsible for designing, building, and activating advanced data center facilities. You will serve as the subject matter expert on thermal management, fluid systems, pumping, flow control, and HVAC—critical components for next-generation AI compute infrastructure. In this role, you will own the design and engineering of fluid and HVAC systems across datacenter builds, including chillers, pumps, dry coolers, chemical treatment systems, water storage, building pressurization, heat exchangers, and associated controls. You will perform CAD modeling and 3D design, conduct fluid analyses for pressure balance and component sizing, and coordinate with procurement, construction, and cross-functional engineering teams to select and procure equipment that meets timeline, cost, and performance requirements. You will work directly with manufacturing partners to ensure designs are manufacturable and reliable, supporting smooth transitions to production with minimal ongoing sustainment. The role involves hands-on design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of datacenter systems and support infrastructure. xAI operates with a flat organizational structure where all employees are expected to be hands-on contributors. The company values engineering excellence, strong communication, work ethic, and prioritization skills. You will work alongside architects, construction managers, and internal customers to identify needs and deliver solutions at the cutting edge of datacenter and compute technology. Basic qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering and 1+ years of professional experience with fluid components (valves, pumps, heat exchangers, pressure transducers, temperature sensors). Senior-level candidates should have 10+ years of experience, a PE license, and a proven track record in management and leadership. Preferred experience includes datacenter consulting (AI-specific preferred), hands-on fluid handling systems, data acquisition and test instrumentation, HVAC systems, REVIT proficiency, and the ability to work independently. Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed is required.
