Mechanical Engineer - COPVs (All Levels)

Impulse is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to own the full lifecycle of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for advanced aerospace vehicles. You will design, analyze, build, test, and integrate flight-qualified COPVs and mounting structures, working across vehicle engineering, manufacturing, test, and loads/dynamics teams. Key responsibilities include: - Design and analysis of innovative COPVs and associated structures using hand calculations and FEA - Development of comprehensive roadmaps for COPV hardware from concept through production - Automation of COPV development processes to improve design efficiency and documentation - Supplier relationship management for COPV materials, components, and manufacturing processes - Sizing COPVs to meet vehicle system requirements and trade-space optimization - First-article build support through production ramp, incorporating design-for-manufacturability and reliability improvements - Test campaign planning and execution to validate flightworthiness and gather design learnings - Load case and environmental definition in collaboration with loads/dynamics and thermal teams - Direct collaboration with manufacturing teams on the shop floor to understand fabrication processes and address production challenges Required qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field - 4+ years of composite materials experience - 2+ years designing and analyzing COPVs, solid rocket motors (SRMs), or similar high-pressure systems - Hands-on composite fabrication experience (university or industry) - Strong structural sizing and hand-calculation skills with model validation capability - Deep understanding of mechanics of materials, failure modes, and analysis methods - Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, forming, lamination, winding) for both metals and composites - CAD proficiency and ability to learn new tools - Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and technical communication skills This role offers cradle-to-grave ownership of next-generation COPV technology for cutting-edge aerospace missions.
