Impulse is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to own the full lifecycle of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for advanced aerospace vehicles. You will design, analyze, build, test, and integrate flight-qualified COPVs and mounting structures, working across vehicle engineering, manufacturing, test, and loads/dynamics teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and analysis of innovative COPVs and associated structures using hand calculations and FEA
- Development of comprehensive roadmaps for COPV hardware from concept through production
- Automation of COPV development processes to improve design efficiency and documentation
- Supplier relationship management for COPV materials, components, and manufacturing processes
- Sizing COPVs to meet vehicle system requirements and trade-space optimization
- First-article build support through production ramp, incorporating design-for-manufacturability and reliability improvements
- Test campaign planning and execution to validate flightworthiness and gather design learnings
- Load case and environmental definition in collaboration with loads/dynamics and thermal teams
- Direct collaboration with manufacturing teams on the shop floor to understand fabrication processes and address production challenges
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 4+ years of composite materials experience
- 2+ years designing and analyzing COPVs, solid rocket motors (SRMs), or similar high-pressure systems
- Hands-on composite fabrication experience (university or industry)
- Strong structural sizing and hand-calculation skills with model validation capability
- Deep understanding of mechanics of materials, failure modes, and analysis methods
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, forming, lamination, winding) for both metals and composites
- CAD proficiency and ability to learn new tools
- Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and technical communication skills
This role offers cradle-to-grave ownership of next-generation COPV technology for cutting-edge aerospace missions.
