Airbound is building the world's most efficient aircraft for ultra-low-cost drone delivery. The mission is to reduce delivery costs from ₹100/km to 10 paise/km by fundamentally redesigning aircraft from first principles, enabling billions of deliveries per day.
The Hardware Engineering team owns the aircraft's physical development across system design, mechanism design, and structural design. This spans the full arc from concept sketch to shipped flying part, including designing custom validation rigs, jigs, and testers.
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will take mechanical assemblies from concept through design, prototyping, testing, and into production. You'll work closely with flight systems, composites, manufacturing, and external vendors. This is a hands-on role where you own end-to-end mechanical systems from first sketch to flying part.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop mechanical systems and assemblies for aircraft from early concept through production intent
- Build and test prototypes yourself; own mechanical systems from concept through testing to production
- Run load calculations, tolerance stacks, basic FEA, and weight budgets to validate designs
- Work with composites layup, injection molding, additive manufacturing, and CNC machining to select the right manufacturing process
- If focused on composites/structures: build and improve composite structure modeling, laminate design, layup optimization, and structural analysis
- If focused on mechanism design: select actuation hardware (servos, stepper motors) and write scripts to drive and test them
- Partner with external vendors and fabrication shops to get parts made to spec on time
- Translate requirements from internal teams and external stakeholders into concrete mechanical designs
The role is in-office at the Hoskote headquarters in Bangalore, with alternate Saturday work schedules. The company offers comprehensive health insurance, relocation assistance, daily travel stipend, and advanced salary credit.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must-Have:
- Advanced proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD
- Working knowledge of load calculations, tolerance analysis, basic FEA, and weight budgeting
- Ability to perform first-principles checks on loads, forces, energies using napkin calculations or free body diagrams
- Hands-on experience designing and prototyping mechanical/electromechanical assemblies for robotics applications
- Familiarity with basics of composites layup, injection molding, additive manufacturing, and machining
- Strength in at least one of: (1) detailed mechanism design including actuation hardware selection and scripting to drive/test, or (2) composites and structures including composite modeling and analysis (not just layup execution)
- Basic project management skills—able to scope, plan, and run projects with minimal oversight
- Strong attention to detail and genuine ownership over parts you touch
- Clear communicator, comfortable working with internal engineering teams and external vendors
- Willingness to go the extra mile when projects need it
Good-to-Have:
- Experience designing/building parts for UAV or aerospace applications
- Hands-on project experience (BAJA, FSAE, or similar build teams) as a substitute for professional experience, especially earlier in career
