Pacific Fusion, founded in 2023 and backed by over $900M in funding, is developing pulser-driven inertial fusion systems to achieve net facility gain and deliver abundant, affordable, clean energy. The company is rapidly designing and building fusion technology while developing key components for scalable, affordable fusion systems.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be critical to the design, prototyping, and implementation of advanced solutions for pulser systems. Your primary focus will be designing and analyzing large, high-performance vacuum seals for water-to-air, air-to-high-vacuum, and water-to-high-vacuum transitions—a core technical challenge in fusion systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and analyze complex vacuum seal systems using CAD, FEM, and engineering analysis tools
- Lead experimental design and testing campaigns in collaboration with internal teams, external vendors, and academic partners
- Conduct research into novel sealing techniques and execute comprehensive test programs
- Perform FMEA and tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure seal reliability and system safety
- Design test assemblies and risk-reduction experiments
- Present technical work across multidisciplinary teams and contribute to system-level integration discussions
- Provide subject-matter expertise in sealing strategies and guide system integration
- Document processes, validation data, and lessons learned
- Mentor junior engineers on design and integration challenges
- Interact with suppliers of vacuum systems and electrical testing components
You bring 5+ years of mechanical design experience with deep expertise in vacuum seals and systems (rough, high, and ultra-high vacuum environments). You hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field. You are proficient in CAD, FEM, and engineering analysis tools, with proven expertise in tolerance analysis, FMEA, seal design, and mechanical integration.
Bonus qualifications include experience in high vacuum systems design and assembly, CREO proficiency, high voltage electrical work, and instrument controls/software implementation.
