Marvel Fusion, Europe's leading fusion energy company founded in 2019, is seeking an experienced Materials Scientist to lead R&D efforts in fuel and fusible materials integration for experimental fusion targets. The company is backed by over €385 million in public and private funding and operates across Munich and Colorado with 120+ scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs.
You will initiate and develop an R&D stream focused on translating experimental requirements into reproducible, scalable fabrication processes for target components. Key responsibilities include:
• Developing and scaling deposition and micro-fabrication techniques for target component integration
• Characterizing and performing metrology on fabricated components to verify specifications
• Coordinating multi-partner research consortia and maintaining collaborations with academic and industrial partners
• Drafting public funding applications and managing associated reporting
• Mentoring junior scientists and coordinating cross-functional teams
• Writing and overseeing technical and safety documentation, protocols, and contributing to internal and external reports
This is a hands-on technical leadership role requiring deep expertise in materials fabrication and characterization, combined with the ability to manage collaborations, secure funding, and develop emerging talent.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 8+ years of experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field with demonstrated seniority in R&D
• Hands-on experience with multiple fabrication techniques: deposition (CVD, MLD, ALD, PLD, sputter-coating, e-beam/thermal evaporation, spray-coating, spin-coating, electrodeposition); laser cutting/machining (picosecond/femtosecond systems); additive manufacturing; molding; hot pressing
• Hands-on experience with characterization/metrology techniques: AFM, profilometry, ellipsometry, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR
• Practical experience with inert-atmosphere processes for sensitive/reactive materials
• Experience in ISO-classified cleanroom environments
• Track record leading or contributing to multi-partner research or industrial collaborations
• Experience leading or contributing to public funding applications with awarded proposals
• Technical leadership and mentoring experience in experimental environments with evolving priorities
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including technical writing
PREFERRED:
• Familiarity with lab automation and novel fabrication process development
• Experience with exotic materials relevant to fusion targets (aerogels, foams, deuterated polymers)
• Background in fusion, plasma physics, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), or energy systems
