Formlabs is seeking a Materials Manufacturing Innovation Engineer to invent next-generation manufacturing processes for specialty materials used in 3D printing. This is not a traditional process engineering role focused on tuning existing equipment; instead, you will design and prototype entirely new manufacturing approaches, from concept through pilot scale to plant floor deployment. You will own an innovation roadmap for materials manufacturing, identifying where new technologies can improve quality, reduce cost, or enable materials that cannot be made today. Your responsibilities include: • Developing new manufacturing approaches from initial concept through bench experiments, prototype equipment design, pilot runs, and business case development • Co-inventing with the R&D team so that new materials and their manufacturing methods are designed together from the start • Scouting existing technologies that improve cost, throughput, or quality and integrating the best ideas into Formlabs • Proving out at least one new manufacturing technology at bench or pilot scale with a clear production case • Handing proven innovations to the plant team with complete documentation and training Formlabs' 3D printing technology powers innovation at over 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. The company is reinventing how the world manufactures physical products, from cutting-edge consumer goods to life-saving medical devices. You will work on materials like UV-curable resins and other photoreactive systems, with potential future work on polymer powders for SLS technology. The role emphasizes moving fluidly from first-principles science to hands-on prototyping to pilot production, using designed experiments and data to validate ideas and build business cases. REQUIREMENTS: • 4+ years of industry experience building new manufacturing technology in chemicals, coatings, adhesives, inks, pharma, advanced materials, or similar fields • Proven track record of introducing new manufacturing methods that improved product quality, cost, or throughput • Strong grounding in materials science: mixing, heat and mass transfer, and rheology of viscous or filled fluids • Ability to move seamlessly from first-principles thinking to bench prototyping to pilot runs • Proficiency with designed experiments and data analysis to evaluate ideas and build business cases • Strong cross-functional communication skills • BS, MS, or PhD in chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, polymer science, or related field BONUS SKILLS: • Continuous manufacturing or process intensification • Inline sensors, process analytical technology (PAT), or chemometrics • Machine learning or AI applied to manufacturing data • UV-curable or photoreactive materials experience • Polymer powder handling • Modeling, automation, or data tools (Python, COMSOL, PLC/DCS)
