Boom Supersonic is building jet engines from high-temperature superalloys and is standing up a new materials lab from the ground up. This role is the first dedicated lab and test engineer position, offering the rare opportunity to create a state-of-the-art materials testing facility from scratch.
You will plan and execute mechanical test campaigns on aerospace alloys, including tensile testing (room and elevated temperature), low-cycle fatigue (LCF), high-cycle fatigue (HCF), creep, and stress rupture testing. You'll work directly with lab technicians and senior materials and processes engineers in a hands-on environment where everyone participates in specimen preparation, testing, and documentation.
Key responsibilities include writing and validating lab test procedures against ASTM standards, then continuously improving them. You'll build the data infrastructure—specimen tracking systems, test logs, raw data pipelines, and reduction scripts—that transforms test output into design-usable material property data. You'll support metallographic evaluation and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) inspection for microstructure verification, fractography, and failure analysis on engine hardware.
Additional duties involve supporting allowables-style test programs with test matrices, traceability, and statistical treatment of material property data. You'll help commission new lab equipment and establish new test capabilities. You'll also support nonconformance reports (NCR) and root cause investigations using disciplined, documented methodology.
