The Materials Engineer will join the R&D and product development team, responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing processes for novel material synthesis from lab-scale proof-of-concept through pilot and commercial scale implementation. This role translates laboratory discoveries into scalable, economically viable production processes.
Key responsibilities include conducting lab-scale and pilot-scale wet chemical synthesis experiments to validate proof-of-concept ideas and develop new material formulations. You will design and execute experiments to establish reaction parameters, optimize yields, and ensure reproducibility. The role involves evaluating and selecting equipment and process configurations for scaling operations, developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and performing mass/energy balances.
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including R&D scientists, operations, and external vendors to ensure smooth scale-up. Additional responsibilities include supporting process safety reviews, risk assessments, and environmental compliance planning. The position requires collecting and analyzing process data to identify optimization, cost reduction, and performance improvement opportunities, and preparing technical documentation and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
A unique aspect of this role is working closely with software and machine learning teams to automate capital project execution workflows and develop reactor and plant optimization algorithms.
Required qualifications include an MS degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering (PhD preferred). You should have hands-on experience in materials synthesis techniques such as solid-state, hydrothermal, precipitation, or other chemical synthesis methods. Proficiency with materials characterization tools (XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, TGA/DSC, spectroscopic methods) is essential. Experience with process design, equipment specification, and scaling laboratory processes to pilot or production scale is required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach, excellent communication, and teamwork abilities in multidisciplinary environments are critical. Familiarity with process simulation tools such as OLI systems is a plus.
