As Market Manager, you will own the Detroit market end-to-end: launch, operations, and growth. This is a hands-on operating role requiring presence in the field, in the data, and in the details.
Pre-Launch Responsibilities:
- Secure and outfit Detroit's operating footprint (facility, lot space, equipment, workflows)
- Build local vendor network (maintenance, repair, cleaning, towing, fueling/charging)
- Partner with central teams on Michigan licensing, registration, and regulatory compliance
- Coordinate delivery, registration, inspection, and road-readiness of first vehicles
- Recruit, onboard, and activate Detroit's first driver cohort, then build repeatable supply processes
- Hire, onboard, and train the local operations team you will lead
- Document launch processes to accelerate future market openings
Post-Launch Responsibilities:
- Own day-to-day fleet operations: driver scheduling (24-hour coverage), dispatch, vehicle availability, performance monitoring
- Manage maintenance and repair programs to maximize utilization and minimize downtime
- Partner with Growth team on driver recruiting, onboarding, and retention
- Support and train drivers on safety, platform best practices, and rider experience
- Manage, coach, and develop the local operations team, scaling headcount as volume grows
- Scale driver supply and fleet size; expand shift coverage and service area
- Build market growth plans and secure necessary investment
- Own Detroit's operating and financial metrics (utilization, revenue/cost per vehicle, driver retention, contribution margin)
- Analyze performance to identify and close profitability and efficiency gaps
- Build and manage operating budget; report performance to leadership regularly
- Set and track KPIs from launch through scale
- Ensure compliance with Michigan and Detroit requirements, safety standards, and 8Fleet policy
- Run safety audits and drive corrective action
- Surface operational and regulatory risks early with recommendations
Requirements:
- 4+ years in operations management, business consulting, or comparable operating role with ownership of business goals and processes
- 2+ years managing people directly (hiring, coaching, developing)
- Direct experience opening something that didn't previously exist (new market, site, facility, branch, region, or line of business) and running it through first operating months
- Track record of deciding and moving with incomplete information
- Genuine comfort with data: building analysis, drawing insights, acting on findings
- Strong communication across diverse audiences (drivers, hourly teams, vendors, city officials, leadership)
- BA/BS or equivalent practical operating experience
- Based in Detroit or willing to relocate ahead of launch; role is on-site in market
- Willingness to work 24-hour operation hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends, especially during launch)
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Nice to Have:
- Experience in rideshare, last-mile delivery, car rental, vehicle leasing, or vehicle-heavy operations
- Experience operating on or alongside Uber, Lyft, or similar platforms
- Founder or early-employee experience
- Familiarity with Detroit metro market (vendor landscape, labor market, geography)
