The Market Expansion Manager will join a small, high-impact SWAT-like team responsible for launching local financial products in Rain's target geographies. This role is inherently cross-functional, requiring close collaboration with Product, Legal, Compliance, and Go-To-Market teams. The position is deliberately temporary in each market—the model involves deploying into a market, launching the product, hiring and onboarding a local General Manager and their initial team, then moving to the next geography.
Key responsibilities include:
- Spending significant in-person time in each target market to execute launches
- Owning market launches end-to-end, from entry decision through operational handoff to local leadership
- Managing regulatory and legal processes for license expansion or transfer, working directly with the legal team
- Defining and executing operationalization strategy for each market, including technology, team, and systems deployment decisions
- Identifying and removing blockers to rapid market launch
- Coordinating and driving a 100-day plan for each market, including workstream sequencing, reporting cadence, and escalation protocols
- Identifying and hiring key local roles (country lead and initial hires), then coaching them through their first weeks
- Proactively detecting gaps and missing capabilities before they become problems
- Owning and continuously improving the market launch playbook
Market launches are complex projects running 3–12 months, touching approximately twelve cross-functional capabilities and more than ten internal functions. Success requires being personally accountable for outcomes rather than project plans, and thriving in an environment where task owners may not directly report to you.
Requirements:
- 6–10 years of experience in strategy consulting, private equity operations, or an operating role in a regulated fintech or payments business
- Strong communication skills: ability to independently write high-quality formal documents and represent Rain in high-stakes meetings with regulators, investors, partners, and customers
- Business and technical acumen: capacity to work through complexity across different workstreams (pricing, tech, legal, compliance), identifying what matters amid noise
- Proven project management experience driving complex projects to completion, particularly when task owners don't directly report to you
- Practicality and effectiveness: ability to get things done quickly despite challenges and deliver high output when required
- Intellectual curiosity: eagerness to go deep into technical topics, especially when answers are not obvious
- Genuine desire to travel and spend significant in-person time in target markets to launch products, hire teams, and solve problems
- Based in New York or Madrid, or willing to relocate
- Native or fluent English proficiency
Bonus attributes:
- Direct experience with regulatory approval processes, market expansion, or post-merger integration
- Experience in payments, card issuing, e-money, or banking (as operator, regulator, adviser, or network)
- Track record of expanding a business into new geographies and taking products live in new jurisdictions
- Knowledge of payment and crypto regulatory landscapes
- Familiarity with stablecoins and how onchain technology interacts with traditional payments
- Additional language proficiency (Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, or Arabic)
- Experience building a function from scratch and hiring the team that followed
