Applied Intuition is seeking a Maritime Test Engineer to support the testing and validation of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) for defense and commercial applications. This is a hands-on, field-intensive role based in San Diego with significant time spent aboard vessels conducting real-world test operations. You will execute on-water test events for autonomous surface vehicles in both closed-course and open-ocean environments. Key responsibilities include: conducting pre-underway system checkouts and launch/recovery operations; operating and monitoring autonomy systems during test sorties while maintaining deck safety; collecting and performing first-pass analysis of test data; identifying and documenting system discrepancies in Jira; contributing to test plans and procedures; authoring comprehensive after-action and test reports; and supporting Hardware-in-the-Loop and simulation testing between sorties. Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Ocean, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience); 3+ years testing, integrating, or operating complex electro-mechanical or software-intensive systems; hands-on experience testing autonomous or unmanned systems (air, ground, or sea); demonstrated ability working offshore on vessels in harsh conditions; experience with Atlassian Jira; strong technical writing skills; willingness to travel up to 40% including extended offshore periods; U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Nice-to-have skills include direct USV/UUV experience, maritime operations background, USCG credentials, familiarity with marine electronics and RF communications, government test program support experience, and prior military service in relevant operational or technical roles (Navy EOD, Naval Special Warfare, or robotic/autonomous systems billets).
