Rocket Lab is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer II to join the Neutron program at the Space Structures Complex production facility in Middle River, MD. Neutron is a medium-lift, highly reusable launch vehicle designed to deliver mega constellations, high-assurance payloads, and enable human spaceflight.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving manufacturing technologies and processes for Neutron launch vehicle structures. You will plan and execute the build and integration of Neutron flight hardware, develop concepts of operations and ground support tooling for handling components and large assemblies, and create build methods that increase throughput and reduce errors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Planning and executing build and integration of Neutron and associated flight hardware
- Developing concepts of operations, design, and driving build of ground support tooling and processes
- Developing build methods to increase throughput, reduce errors, and simplify processes
- Supporting integration engineers in developing and enabling 1st and 2nd stage vehicle integration, fluid systems, avionics, and AFTS
- Developing and refining inspection, repair/retrofit, assembly, and system test procedures
- Collecting and documenting feedback for design and manufacturing teams through lessons learned
- Developing clear work instructions for communication between engineering and technicians
- Contributing to build procedures and converting non-conformances into actionable improvements
- Maintaining integrated planning documents for launch vehicle configurations and work scope
- Designing and developing tools and hardware for vehicle processing and testing
- Developing, building, and maintaining Neutron processing facilities
- Collaborating closely with management, peers from other departments, and skilled technicians
- Managing multiple priorities while maintaining focus on project goals
You will work in office and technical environments with occasional exposure to noise, dust, and fumes in production areas. The role requires sitting at a desk and operating computers for extended periods, using hands with dexterity to operate controls and tools, reading technical documents and drawings, and moving between buildings and work areas as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in industrial, mechanical, aerospace engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of experience building and testing hardware associated with space launch vehicles or similar aerospace and defense hardware (internships and school projects qualify)
- Demonstrated ability to model with 3D CAD, produce prints, and work with large assemblies
Nice to Have:
- Proven ability to interface with multidisciplinary functions of mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems
- Experience developing and implementing comprehensive work instructions and test procedures
- Experience working directly with launch vehicle hardware and subsystems including avionics, high-pressure gas, structures, electrical, and mechanical
- Experience building and testing complex assemblies at system and sub-system levels
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects with successful outcomes
