Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to lead the transition of fusion energy products from development to full-scale production. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including product design, quality assurance, supply chain, and production to ensure successful manufacturing introduction of new products. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing manufacturing processes that meet quality, cost, and production targets; designing and optimizing production layouts, tooling, and fixtures; conducting Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) analyses; creating and maintaining comprehensive process documentation including work instructions, process flow diagrams, pFMEAs, and SOPs; coordinating with supply chain and planning teams on component sourcing and compliance; developing and analyzing manufacturing performance metrics to drive continuous improvement; providing hands-on training to production personnel; troubleshooting production and quality issues; and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent work experience; 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with proven track record transitioning products from R&D to manufacturing; experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; and ability to thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments managing multiple priorities. Bonus qualifications include experience with magnets, thermo-mechanical assemblies, machining, welding, and vacuum systems; advanced Lean and Six Sigma expertise; equipment specification and maintenance planning; CAD proficiency; work instruction writing and process mapping; GD&T and tolerance stack-up knowledge; and strong self-motivation with excellent troubleshooting skills. Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, perform extended periods of typing, standing, stooping, and sitting, and work safely around hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics. Occasional travel and flexible scheduling (nights/weekends/on-call) may be required. Export Control Law compliance required.
