Proxima Fusion, Europe's fastest-growing fusion company and best-funded fusion player, is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join its TechOps team in Munich. The company is developing next-generation stellarator fusion power plants (Alpha and Stellaris) and is backed by over €650M in funding.
In this role, you will develop and industrialize manufacturing processes for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet coils—the core technology enabling commercial fusion. You'll translate magnet designs into repeatable, high-yield production processes and own the tooling, fixtures, and quality systems required for consistent manufacturing outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop, qualify, and continuously improve manufacturing processes for HTS coil winding, insulation, impregnation, and joining in collaboration with design and physics teams
- Drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) collaboration, acting as the manufacturing voice in design reviews
- Design, procure, and validate tooling, fixtures, and jigs for precision winding and assembly of non-planar coil geometries
- Define assembly sequences, work instructions, SOPs, and visual documentation for technicians
- Implement process controls and inspection methods to catch defects early and protect conductor integrity
- Lead NPI campaigns, process trials, and pilot builds with hands-on floor support
- Conduct root-cause analysis and corrective actions using structured methodologies (8D, 5-Why, fishbone)
- Support supplier qualification and manage engineering/process change control
- Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve manufacturability issues and support ramp from prototype to serial production
You bring 3+ years of experience specifying, procuring, installing, and commissioning production equipment and/or automation for component manufacturing lines. You have hands-on experience designing tooling and fixtures for low-volume, high-precision production, with proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar) and GD&T. You've written clear work instructions and SOPs in production or NPI environments, understand process control and statistical methods (SPC, FMEA, 8D), and have supported prototype or first-article builds directly on the floor. Strong communication in German or English is required. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or related field is required.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with PLM systems (Arena, Enovia), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES/Tulip, Delmia), research-to-product transition environments, and scaling processes from prototype to serial production.
