Thatch is building a healthcare system that people love, and this role is a core part of that mission. As Managing Product Counsel, you will serve as an embedded legal partner to Product, Engineering, and Design teams, working from early product scoping through launch across new features, platform integrations, and partner-facing surfaces.
Your responsibilities will span multiple dimensions of product legal work:
**Regulatory & Compliance**: You'll advise on the regulatory architecture of the product itself, including ICHRA and IRS substantiation rules, ERISA, ACA, and producer licensing and TPA obligations flowing through regulated subsidiaries. You'll partner with the Compliance team on product-facing regulatory review and own pre-launch design and disclosure judgment calls.
**Product & Customer-Facing Legal**: You'll review in-product disclosures, onboarding and enrollment flows, and product marketing. You'll work on the legal surfaces customers actually touch—terms of service, user agreements, consents and authorizations, notices, and disclosures.
**Privacy, Data & AI**: You'll counsel on privacy, data use, and AI-powered features, building scalable review processes rather than handling one-offs.
**Systems & Operations**: You'll build systems that scale—launch checklists, playbooks, self-serve guidance, and training—so teams can move fast without a lawyer in every room. You'll work with others to set the standard for how product legal work gets done at Thatch as the function grows.
**IP & Commercial**: You'll identify protectable intellectual property assets and work with IP counsel to protect them. You'll partner with commercial counsel where product decisions create downstream contractual commitments to carriers, partners, or customers.
In your first six months, you'll be embedded with Product and Engineering (brought in at design rather than launch review), establish written standards for product-facing regulatory reviews that teams actually use, and develop playbooks to focus work on novel issues.
Thatch is a fully distributed, early-stage company using technology to transform how America does healthcare. The team is described as happy, friendly, and high-velocity.
**Requirements**:
- JD from an accredited law school with 9+ years of legal practice, including meaningful in-house time supporting Product and Engineering teams
- Experience advising on regulated consumer products where compliance is designed into the product rather than papered around it
- Knowledge of health insurance, employee benefits, financial services, or a comparably regulated environment (you may not have all but should have some)
- Ability to read a product spec, data flow, or design file and identify legal issues without being walked through them
- Comfort making and documenting risk calls where the regulatory answer is genuinely unsettled, with clear judgment about which risks warrant slowing a launch
- Track record of building legal processes, frameworks, and operations in startup or high-growth environments
- Excellent communication skills and collaborative approach with cross-functional teams, especially engineers and PMs
- Ability and willingness to lead, even if not managing people
**Nice-to-have experience**:
- Health benefits, payroll, and tax reporting
- Depth in IP or data protection laws
- AI governance in consumer-facing products
- Fearless approach to using new technologies, including AI tooling, in your own work
- Strong business acumen balancing legal risk against commercial objectives
