New Relic is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Distributed Tracing platform team within the APM product organization. This role combines technical leadership with people management, requiring someone with deep software engineering expertise and proven ability to scale and mentor engineering teams.
You will lead a full-stack team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining New Relic's Distributed Tracing platform—a mission-critical product that provides customers visibility into application workloads, including AI agents. The platform supports next-generation APM capabilities such as AI Monitoring, Digital Experience Monitoring, and Synthetic testing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing an engineering team focused on distributed tracing platform development
- Coaching and mentoring engineers to develop their technical and professional skills
- Driving technology decisions, process efficiency, and engineering excellence
- Planning and executing software projects both within and across teams
- Collaborating with cross-functional partners to align product and business goals
- Implementing processes and methodologies that foster operational excellence
- Recruiting, training, and developing strong engineering talent
- Handling customer incidents and understanding technical implications of engineering decisions
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years leading engineering teams
- Track record of building and scaling strong technical teams
- Hands-on experience with Java or other backend programming languages
- Experience with customer incident handling and deep technical problem-solving
- Experience delivering products in cloud environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Bonus experience includes observability tooling, distributed tracing, OpenTelemetry, APM, high-scale distributed systems, Kafka, Kubernetes, or shipping developer-facing products.
