NerdWallet is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a customer-facing product team building across React Native mobile and Next.js web experiences. The role reports to the Senior Director of Engineering and owns outcomes for a team of senior engineers working on NerdWallet's mobile app and web platform—a trusted financial brand at an inflection point.
The company is undergoing a significant transformation: evolving from traditional product development to an AI-native workflow, shifting from human-written code to AI-generated code, and moving from demand capture to demand creation. You will lead your team through both the product ambition and the workflow shift simultaneously, shipping experiences that deepen how millions of users connect with their financial lives.
Key responsibilities include owning team outcomes and craft; shaping the roadmap alongside Product and Design with your own point of view on what's worth building and what AI can extend; leading the team to build compounding systems rather than one-off features; establishing and maintaining a high performance bar with strong feedback and people development; making quality calls on speed vs. polish in a financial services context; and ensuring peer teams and leadership understand your team's strategy, roadmap, and progress.
You are a leader and coach with strong technical experience who built software before managing people and hasn't left that behind. You draw technical vision from senior engineers rather than being the technical lead yourself. You think in systems, collaborate laterally with peer managers, and operate with conviction when driving organizational change.
Required: 8+ years software engineering (hands-on IC experience), 2+ years managing engineering teams (not first-time management), accountability for team outcomes beyond delivery dates, experience leading an AI-native product engineering team with specifics on what broke and lessons learned, strong product and business instincts, track record of delivering hard feedback and developing top performers, technical credibility on modern web/mobile stacks, comfort with ambiguity, and experience with data, experimentation, and measurement.
Preferred: consumer fintech experience, React Native/Next.js/TypeScript/GraphQL/Apollo expertise, personalization and recommendation systems experience, compliance/security partnership experience, operating model definition, and informal or formal manager coaching.
