Wealthsimple is Canada's leading financial innovator serving 4+ million Canadians with $155B+ in assets under administration. The Financial Risk Engineering team builds systems to detect and prevent fraud while maintaining seamless user experience.
As Manager of Software Development for Financial Risk, you'll lead the engineering team responsible for fraud detection and response systems. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll own the technical roadmap while remaining actively involved in architecture decisions and code review.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning and evolving the technical roadmap for the Financial Risk Engineering team
- Acting as connective tissue between engineering, product, compliance, fraud countermeasures, and data science
- Staying hands-on: contributing directly to the codebase, weighing in on architecture, and unblocking the team
- Building and growing a team that operates confidently in ambiguous risk environments
- Partnering with data science and analytics to turn fraud signals into effective detection systems
- Shaping how AI tools are integrated across the team, from incident investigation to code review
You bring experience managing engineering teams with sufficient technical depth to contribute directly, not just oversee. You're comfortable making decisions involving real trade-offs without clear right answers. You have a strong track record partnering across non-engineering functions (product, compliance, data science) and building trust with diverse stakeholders. You're a clear communicator able to explain technical and risk trade-offs to varied audiences.
Nice-to-haves include experience with streaming technologies (Apache Flink, Spark, Kafka), data engineering background with large datasets, risk or payments experience, close collaboration with analytics/data science teams, and full-stack experience (React frontend, various backend languages).
Wealthsimple offers top-tier health benefits, employer-matched savings, 20 vacation days plus 4 wellness days and unlimited sick/mental health days, 90 days remote work outside Canada annually, and employee resource groups. The company is hybrid with 1,500+ employees across North America.
