Divergent 3D is seeking a Manager of Optical Manufacturing Development Engineering to lead the optical systems function within the Manufacturing Development Engineering (MDE) team. This is a player-coach role combining hands-on technical work with team leadership.
You will own the integration, commissioning, and long-term calibration stability of optical subsystems across the LPBF (laser powder bed fusion) machine fleet. Optical subsystems include beam delivery, scanners/galvos, F-theta lenses, and high-speed imaging systems. You'll lead a small team of optics engineers while remaining personally engaged in builds, troubleshooting, calibration verification, and root-cause analysis.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning optical subsystem integration from initial bring-up through commissioning and production
- Developing calibration procedures and verification methods that confirm calibration integrity is maintained over time despite drift, wear, and environmental variation
- Building and leading a small team of optics engineers, working alongside them on technical challenges
- Partnering with hardware design, controls/software, process engineering, and operations to resolve optical performance issues affecting build quality, uptime, and throughput
- Owning documentation including work instructions, calibration procedures, acceptance criteria, and test plans
- Leading root-cause analysis on optical-related failures and owning corrective/preventive actions
- Establishing metrics for optical system health (calibration hold time, drift rate, verification pass rate, MTBF) and driving continuous improvement
- Training technicians and engineers on calibration, alignment, and laser safety practices
- Supporting scale-up and replication of optical systems across additional machines and factories
