Eight Sleep is seeking a Manager of Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical and product design engineering team in San Francisco. This is a player-coach leadership role where you will serve as the technical anchor for mechanical execution while building and managing a small team of mechanical, soft goods, and prototype & test engineers.
You will oversee all aspects of mechanical engineering execution across the full product development cycle—from concept definition and feasibility prototyping through EVT, DVT, PVT, and production ramp. This includes the flagship Pod product and an ambitious roadmap of new products. You'll provide hands-on technical leadership on cross-functional trade-offs and architectural decisions spanning thermals, fluids, mechanisms, and sensing. You will ensure hardware products meet high standards of performance, user experience, and quality, and will travel to Asia as needed to work with manufacturing partners and suppliers.
You will collaborate with the Chief Product Officer and executive team to shape the hardware product roadmap, translating requirements into shippable mechanical architecture, schedules, and build plans. Cross-functional collaboration spans electrical engineering, software, sensing, clinical, operations, marketing, and finance.
On the people side, you will hire and coach talented engineers committed to the mission, foster a culture of excellence and collaboration, implement systems and processes for peak team efficiency (design reviews, ownership clarity, phase gates), and provide feedback and performance management.
Required: 8+ years developing complex electromechanical systems (ideally high-volume consumer hardware); proven track record launching products under aggressive timelines with lean teams and scaling to high-volume production in Asia; deep knowledge of injection molding, electronics/sensor integration, and mechanism design; proficiency with thermal engineering, fluid systems, actuators, and soft goods; experience leading early-stage product development from concept through industrial design; demonstrated ability to hire and manage mechanical engineers; BSME or equivalent; willingness to travel to China; ability to work from SF office full-time (5 days/week).
