Clio is seeking a Manager of Machine Learning Engineering to lead a team of 6+ ML engineers building state-of-the-art AI solutions for the legal industry. The role focuses on designing and shipping agentic systems—including retrieval, tool use, orchestration, and evaluation frameworks—that integrate GenAI and LLMs into Clio's platform to streamline legal professionals' workflows.
Key responsibilities include leading the ML engineering team in developing innovative AI features, collaborating cross-functionally with MLOps, product management, and data science to identify new tooling and LLM-driven capabilities, and ensuring solutions are reliable and safe in production. You'll work in an agile environment across multiple projects and distributed teams spanning three countries, providing technical guidance, code review, and mentorship while staying current with rapidly evolving AI/ML technologies.
The ideal candidate brings experience managing high-performing engineering teams, hands-on familiarity with building agentic systems (tool-calling agents, RAG pipelines, prompt design), and deep understanding of LLMs and the competitive landscape. Technical expertise in fine-tuning foundational models, manipulating complex unstructured data, and evaluating agent behavior at scale is valued. You should demonstrate strong mentorship skills, clear communication, ability to build trust across teams, and a track record of success with large-scale SaaS products in agile environments.
Clio offers a competitive total rewards package including equitable salary ($208k–$312k USD), top-tier health/dental/vision benefits, flexible time off (20 days encouraged annually), 401k matching, EAP counseling, and a hybrid work model with flexibility for remote-first candidates. The company is committed to diversity, inclusion, and belonging, fostering an environment where teams can do their best work.
