Relativity Space is building rockets to serve today's needs and tomorrow's breakthroughs. The Terran R vehicle will deliver customer payloads to orbit, meeting growing demand for launch capacity. The Launch Mechanical team is responsible for designing, building, testing, and integrating complex mechanical systems that interface directly with the launch vehicle and ground support infrastructure.
In this Manager role, you will lead a team of launch mechanical engineers responsible for the full engineering cycle on projects involving static structures, dynamic mechanisms, and control systems powered by fluid, electrical, and combustion sources. You'll manage a small team designing, building, and testing mechanisms, tools, and interfaces used with flight vehicles and ground systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and developing a team of launch mechanical engineers
- Setting clear priorities based on launch schedules, program needs, and company goals
- Supporting engineers with design decisions, problem-solving, and practical mechanical engineering methods
- Coordinating staffing, schedules, design reviews, and technical risks across engineering and operations teams
- Reviewing launch system designs to ensure safe, reliable, and practical solutions
- Hiring, training, coaching, and evaluating team members
- Providing leadership with clear updates on progress, risks, and resource needs
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related technical field
- 5+ years of engineering experience in launch operations, testing, ground systems, or complex mechanical systems
- 1+ year of experience managing an engineering team, including work assignment, coaching, and performance feedback
- Strong fundamentals in structures, mechanical design, and fluid systems
- Proven ability to complete engineering projects on schedule while addressing technical issues and changing priorities
- Experience mentoring engineers, resolving conflicts, and communicating with technical teams and leadership
Nice-to-have experience includes launch vehicle interface mechanisms, NASA/DoD/Space Force standards, structural materials and manufacturing processes, and high-pressure or cryogenic fluid systems design.
