Discord is building a modern IT Ops Engineering function and seeking a manager to lead and scale this newly formed team. This role owns the systems every Discord employee touches: identity management, device management, connectivity, collaboration tools, SaaS platforms, and the endpoint security surface shared with Enterprise Security.
You will be measured by your team's leverage and the reliability of the employee technology surface, not by ticket volume or headcount. The function focuses on replacing manual, repetitive work with vendor-native automation, clean integrations, and self-service capabilities so employees resolve common needs independently.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and leading a team of IT Ops Engineers: hire, develop, retain, set expectations, coach for growth, and provide direct feedback aligned with Discord's leveling matrices.
- Setting technical direction: own standards, architecture choices, and automation practices for identity, devices, connectivity, SaaS, and endpoint security. Spend 10-20% of time hands-on in technical work, on-call rotation, and escalations.
- Owning operational excellence: ensure reliability and coverage of the employee technology surface, run onboarding and offboarding as a dependable service, and maintain healthy on-call rotations.
- Driving automation and outcomes: eliminate toil through vendor-native automation and no-code/low-code workflows. Hold the team accountable to quantified impact (time saved, risk reduced) rather than tickets closed.
- Cross-functional partnerships: operate as one team with Enterprise Security on shared endpoint and identity surfaces, partner with Enterprise Platform Engineering where work meets the platform, and collaborate with People, Finance, and Procurement on lifecycle, spend, and vendor decisions.
- Owning vendor relationships and spend: manage relationships, configuration standards, and license/spend optimization for core SaaS and endpoint tooling.
- Supporting compliance: ensure the team supports access certification, User Access Review cycles, and audit needs (e.g., SOX) in partnership with Enterprise Security.
Requirements:
- Experience leading IT professionals with a track record of growing people and delivering through a team; demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and set high bars.
- Deep, hands-on systems background across several of: identity (Okta, SSO, SCIM, MFA), endpoint management (Jamf, Intune), networking (WiFi, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Zero Trust), SaaS administration and governance, audiovisual and conferencing, and endpoint security (EDR, DLP). Must have come up through the craft and be able to hold technical direction.
- Strong automation instincts; reach for automation before runbooks and expect the team to treat manual, repetitive work as a bug to be fixed.
- Business-problem and outcomes mindset; measure team by leverage and impact, not ticket volume, and articulate the time or risk the team removes.
- Collaborative, low-ego, secure-by-design posture with clear written communication.
- Comfort with ambiguity and energy for building a new function in a greenfield environment.
