Datadog is seeking an Engineering Manager II to lead and scale the Observability Pipelines engineering organization at a critical growth phase. Observability Pipelines is Datadog's on-premise, vendor-agnostic telemetry pipeline product positioned at the center of a fast-consolidating market and central to Datadog's data pipeline optimization strategy for Logs and Metrics customers.
In this role, you will directly manage Engineering Manager 1s and individual contributors across distributed locations (NYC and Paris), currently ~20 ICs, with responsibility for growing the management and technical leadership layers as the org expands. You'll set technical direction, establish operating rhythms (planning cadence, on-call standards, cross-team alignment), and serve as the connective tissue across the distributed team.
Key responsibilities include: partnering directly with Product to co-own roadmap and strategy; owning cross-org relationships with SaaS Logs Pipelines, BYOC, and the Vector open-source community; coaching managers and senior engineers; and building succession and growth plans to scale the organization beyond your direct leadership.
You should bring experience managing managers across distributed teams with a track record of raising operational standards. Deep background in distributed systems and high-throughput data infrastructure is essential—enough to guide architectural and build-vs-buy decisions at the domain level. Familiarity with on-premises or customer-installed software and its operational complexities (support escalations, incident diagnosis, environment variability) is required. You'll be a strategic partner to Product, helping set roadmap direction rather than just executing against it, and you should be commercially aware of competitive landscape and business outcomes. Experience with high-performance or Rust-based data pipeline systems is a strong plus.
