Anthropic is seeking a founding Manager for Forward Deployed Engineering to build and lead a new team embedding directly with strategic enterprise customers to deploy production AI applications using Claude. This is a player-coach role requiring someone who thrives in ambiguity and can scale a practice from zero to one.
You will hire and develop a world-class team of Forward Deployed Engineers, setting technical and operational standards for customer engagements. Key responsibilities include conducting regular 1:1s and mentorship, staffing customer engagements across the team's portfolio, reviewing technical architectures and code quality, and staying hands-on to lead discovery sessions and debug complex issues alongside your team. You'll collaborate with account teams and Engagement Managers during pre-sales to qualify engagements and scope work, while building repeatable playbooks, starter repositories, and integration templates that capture field learnings.
You'll define team OKRs tied to customer success and product adoption, create operational cadences (standups, retros, engagement reviews), and partner with Product and Engineering to translate field insights into product improvements. Travel to customer sites is expected 25-50%, particularly during engagement kickoffs and for high-priority accounts.
The ideal candidate has 10+ years in software engineering, solutions architecture, or technical customer-facing roles (forward deployed engineering, consulting), plus 2+ years managing people in services/post-sales/FDE organizations with a track record of hiring and retaining strong engineers. You should have experience building organizations from 0-1, working directly with enterprise customers on technical implementations, and navigating complex organizational dynamics. Executive presence, strong communication skills, and genuine excitement about defining what great looks like for a new team are essential.
