xAI is seeking a Data Center Operations Manager to oversee the technicians and infrastructure supporting its AI compute systems. This role manages critical operations across power, cooling, networking, and hardware deployments, with a target of 99.999% uptime for AI workloads.
Key responsibilities include leading and developing a team of Data Center Operations Technicians through training and performance management; overseeing site operations to ensure reliability; streamlining hardware lifecycle management, incident resolution, and inventory processes; coordinating between technicians, AI specialists, and external vendors; championing energy-efficient and sustainable practices; tracking uptime, power efficiency, and issue resolution metrics; leading emergency response; building scalable operational processes (preventative maintenance, Jira workflows); and supporting multi-site standardization as the company expands.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of data center operations experience in critical environments, with 3+ years managing technical teams. Required skills include expertise in server hardware, cabling, and data center technologies from setup through lifecycle management, plus the ability to lead effectively in fast-paced, high-responsibility settings.
Preferred qualifications include experience in compute-heavy environments (AI, ML, HPC); proficiency with Jira and collaborative workflows; strong analytical and communication skills; scripting ability (Python, Bash); vendor partnership and scaling experience; and enthusiasm for xAI's mission. The role requires occasional on-call duties, willingness to travel to data center locations, and physical capability to handle data center tasks (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, occasional ladder use). xAI operates with a flat organizational structure emphasizing hands-on contribution, engineering excellence, and strong communication.
