Coinbase's CX Intelligence team is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer (IC4) to build and evolve the conversational AI ecosystem that powers customer support. You'll design and implement an orchestration layer that coordinates interactions between vendor AI systems, internal multi-agent platforms, and human agents, enabling customers to get answers faster while helping support teams resolve cases more effectively. Key responsibilities include: building production-grade Python services that bridge advanced AI/ML capabilities with reliable customer-facing products; developing the orchestration layer managing state transitions, context sharing, and intent routing across vendor and internal LLM frameworks in distributed environments; driving well-scoped ML projects from design through delivery while balancing technical trade-offs; contributing to system design, coding standards, and AI/ML best practices; partnering with engineers and cross-functional teams to build secure, scalable, high-performing AI experiences; and participating in design reviews to ensure features meet Coinbase's standards for security, compliance, and performance. You'll work with modern AI architectures including LLMs and deep learning frameworks such as LangGraph, LangSmith, Google ADK, Vertex AI, and AWS Bedrock. The role requires strong Python proficiency, ability to write clean and well-tested production code, and working knowledge in domains like NLP, information retrieval, computer vision, or statistical modeling. You should be comfortable writing technical design documents and communicating ML system designs to cross-functional stakeholders, and demonstrate responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver measurable business improvements. Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person "surge" sessions for intense collaborative work. The team is part of the Enterprise Applications and Architecture org and works closely with Conversation Design, CX, and engineering teams to deliver secure, compliant, and scalable solutions.
