Carta is seeking a Legal Product Builder to join Carta Law, an AI-native legal services firm that combines legal expertise with cutting-edge technology. You will sit at the intersection of law and product development, building AI-powered legal products that transform how private capital operates.
In this role, you will:
• Build AI-powered legal products alongside engineers and product managers, bringing deep legal expertise into the product development process to turn complex legal work into scalable, agent-driven experiences
• Translate legal judgment into systems by breaking down legal processes like contract review and compliance into the decisions, rules, workflows, exceptions, and escalation points that AI agents need to navigate
• Develop evaluation frameworks for AI agents, creating examples, evaluation criteria, test cases, and feedback loops that help legal agents produce accurate, useful, and trustworthy work
• Evaluate and improve agent performance by testing against real-world scenarios, identifying failure modes, diagnosing reasoning gaps, and partnering with engineers to enhance capabilities. You'll anticipate ambiguity, edge cases, and situations requiring human judgment
• Prototype new legal capabilities using AI tools directly to experiment with prompts, workflows, and agent behavior, moving from concept to working prototype before or alongside engineering
You'll work with top AI engineers and legal professionals who are reimagining how legal work gets done, from negotiation agents to document intelligence tools to a dedicated platform combining agents, workflows, and human lawyers.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Legal Background: 4+ years of substantive legal training and experience (Big Law, in-house at asset manager/PE firm, or comparable legal practice or legal-adjacent role)
• Product Thinking: Demonstrated track record of identifying where legal workflows break down and proposing or building solutions
• Technical Fluency: Comfortable sparring with engineers on how AI products are built; able to translate legal judgment into actionable technical requirements (coding not required)
• Communication & Autonomy: Strong written communicator with sharp judgment; operates with high degree of independence
• Nice to have: Direct commercial contract negotiation experience (NDAs, subscription agreements, transaction docs); prior legal tech company or hybrid legal/product role experience; familiarity with contract automation, document intelligence, or negotiation tooling; founder experience or track record of building something from scratch
