Cognition AI, maker of Devin (the first AI software engineer), is seeking an exceptional operator to build an AI-native legal function for a rapidly growing AI company. This is not a traditional legal operations role—you will fundamentally redesign how Legal operates at a company built on automation and AI. You will own the complete legal operations function: designing intake and triage systems, identifying work to automate versus handle manually, building intelligent workflows, and managing technology, budgets, and outside counsel relationships. The core mission is to create a legal organization that operates with the speed and leverage of Cognition itself—smaller, faster, more automated, and deeply integrated with the business. Key responsibilities include: (1) designing and continuously improving the legal operating model, identifying what should be automated, what requires lawyers, and what should disappear; (2) building systems that make it easy for teams across the company (Sales, Product, Engineering, Security, Finance, People) to get legal answers quickly; (3) owning the legal technology strategy—contracting, knowledge management, matter management, e-billing, entity management—with a bias toward solving problems rather than adopting traditional legal tech; (4) deploying AI-enabled workflows using Devin and other tools to increase team leverage; (5) managing the legal budget, outside counsel relationships, and vendor negotiations; and (6) helping build a legal team culture of high ownership and judgment. You are a strong operator comfortable moving between strategy and execution. You have significant experience in legal operations, business operations, or similar roles in complex organizations. Experience in rapidly growing tech companies is strongly preferred. You understand legal function mechanics (budgets, outside counsel, technology, contracting, metrics) but aren't attached to traditional approaches. You're deeply curious about AI and how it changes professional work. You have excellent judgment, bias toward action, clear communication, low ego, and the instinct to fix broken processes rather than manage around them. A JD or MBA is helpful but not required—we care more about what you've built and how you think.
