HoneyCoin, a cross-border payments and stablecoin company operating across Africa, is hiring a mid-level Legal & Compliance Associate based in Douala, Cameroon. This role owns document review and regulatory work for the Cameroon business, ensuring contracts, licensing applications, and regulatory correspondence never delay deals or approvals.
Key responsibilities include reviewing, redlining, and negotiating NDAs, commercial contracts, and regulatory documents in both French and English; drafting from templates and building a bilingual playbook of standard positions and red lines; translating legal and regulatory documents accurately for signing or submission; and providing clear business guidance on each document (sign, sign with changes, or do not sign).
On the regulatory side, you will prepare and review licence applications and regulator correspondence for Cameroon and the CEMAC zone (BEAC, COBAC, Ministry of Finance); track regulatory changes and flag implications for products and licences; review AML/CFT policies, KYC procedures, and compliance documents for local fit; and manage company secretarial work including incorporation documents, filings, board resolutions, and statutory registers.
You will also manage external counsel in Cameroon—scoping work, checking output, and controlling costs—and provide fast, practical legal input to the country manager, partnerships, and operations teams. A live tracker of all documents and filings you own, with status, blockers, and next dates, is essential.
The company values high agency and self-drive: you own outcomes, not tasks; you move without being chased; you find a way when regulators go quiet or counsel is slow; you learn fast in new areas of law or markets; and you are reliable enough that people trust your review to sign on it.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Law degree; bar admission or equivalent professional qualification welcome but not required
- Roughly 3–6 years reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts (law firm, in-house, or compliance function)
- Excellent French and English, written and spoken; ability to redline contracts, write to regulators, and conduct negotiations in either language
- Sound commercial judgement; ability to separate real risk from noise
- Clear, concise writing; ability to summarize complex agreements for non-lawyers
- Working knowledge of Cameroonian law (civil-law and common-law systems)
PLUS (desirable):
- Experience in fintech, payments, mobile money, banking, or digital assets
- Hands-on work with payment or e-money licensing, or direct dealings with BEAC, COBAC, or Ministry of Finance
- Knowledge of OHADA company and commercial law
- Experience with AML/CFT, data protection, or sanctions compliance
- Experience managing external counsel
