Perplexity AI is seeking a technical lead to join the legal operations team and architect a Legal and Operations Engineering platform that transforms manual, high-volume legal workflows into scalable, automated systems. This role reports to the Legal Operations Manager and partners with the General Counsel and VP of Operations on strategic planning and delivery.
Key responsibilities include architecting and building Perplexity's Legal and Operations Engineering platform—a coherent stack of agents, workflows, and evaluation infrastructure that automates commercial contracting, e-discovery, enterprise redlining, subsidiary governance, vendor onboarding, and litigation/matter management. You will own the enterprise contracting automation system end-to-end, ship in-product legal surfaces built on Perplexity's AI infrastructure, and consolidate ad-hoc legal bots and scripts into a documented, observable, reusable platform with clear conventions for personas, tools, evaluations, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop patterns.
You'll serve as the technical partner to the General Counsel, translating complex legal workflows into engineered systems and communicating engineering constraints back to non-technical stakeholders. You'll evaluate, retire, or replace third-party tools where internal systems provide structural advantages. This role becomes the case study for forward-deployed engineering in non-engineering functions at Perplexity, establishing a playbook for Legal, Recruiting, People, Workplace, and Operations.
Required qualifications include 7+ years of backend software engineering with a track record of shipping production systems at scale, working knowledge of legal concepts with some legal operations or paralegal experience preferred, strong business judgment and practical problem-solving skills, and a track record building scalable processes from scratch. You should be fluent with modern legal tech and AI tools, disciplined in human-in-the-loop practices, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills for working with senior legal, finance, and executive stakeholders. Entrepreneurial drive, intellectual curiosity, and agility in ambiguous, fast-moving environments are essential.
Preferred experience includes prior roles at AI-native, SaaS, or consumer technology companies operating at Perplexity's pace, familiarity with e-billing platforms (e.g., Brightflag), matter management, CLM, and entity management systems, and comfort with ambiguity and rapid context-switching.
