Bitwarden is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Secrets Manager & AI Identity team, leading the design and development of next-generation privileged access management (PAM) solutions. You will own critical gateway services, terminal access protocols, and auditing/enforcement systems at the intersection of security, scalability, and user experience.
In this role, you'll operate under Bitwarden's "True Ownership" model as a T-shaped engineer, owning services end-to-end from design and secure development through automated testing, deployment, and production operations. Key responsibilities include designing and developing secure, performant gateway controls and audited terminal login mechanisms; maintaining strict service boundaries and resilient APIs for the PAM platform as an independent tenant; collaborating with cross-functional "Embedded Trio" teams (Product, Design, Engineering) in rapid design-validation cycles; building robust automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines; owning operational health, performance, and reliability in production with on-call participation; and creating high-quality internal architecture specifications and external open-source documentation.
You bring 10-15 years of software engineering experience with team lead background. Strong proficiency in C# / .NET, Rust, or TypeScript is essential, along with practical experience designing secure gateway architectures, reverse proxies, and session proxying (SSH, RDP, HTTPS). You have deep understanding of Identity and Access Management, key-rotation protocols, and real-time audit logging. Your T-shaped mindset includes hands-on experience with Docker/Kubernetes, automated testing frameworks, and SRE/observability tools. You're familiar with zero-trust and zero-knowledge security architectures, encryption standards, and threat modeling. Above all, you're collaborative, adaptable, passionate about open source, and excel at clear written communication and data-driven decision-making.
