Salary: USD 150,000 - 220,000 / annual
WindBorne Systems is building a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons to revolutionize weather forecasting and climate adaptation. The company designs, manufactures, and operates its own balloons to collect critical atmospheric data, enabling weather intelligence that was previously unattainable. Founded by Stanford engineers and backed by top-tier investors including Khosla Ventures, WindBorne is on a mission to eliminate weather uncertainty and help humanity adapt to climate change.
You will own government implementations across multiple WindBorne software platforms, serving as the technical bridge between core technology and government customers. This role requires architecting and implementing government-specific versions of software platforms while ensuring they meet rigorous security, compliance, and operational requirements unique to federal customers. You'll adapt data pipelines, APIs, and analysis tools to work within government infrastructure constraints while maintaining performance and reliability.
Key responsibilities include owning the entire development lifecycle for government-facing systems, working directly with government stakeholders to understand technical requirements, troubleshooting complex integration issues, and delivering mission-critical solutions. You'll need deep expertise in compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, ITAR, and NIST 800-53, treating compliance as an architectural constraint rather than a checkbox exercise.
Required qualifications: at least five years of software engineering experience with demonstrated success owning high-priority development efforts. Full-stack capability across frontend (Ruby on Rails, Postgres) and backend (Python, Rust) systems. Strong background in data engineering including pipeline design, large dataset processing, and optimization. Proven experience developing software adhering to stringent security compliance standards in government, financial, or healthcare contexts. Excellent written and verbal communication skills suitable for customer-facing technical and non-technical audiences. Strong problem-solving and debugging skills across the stack. Ability to obtain a security clearance.
Nice-to-have qualifications include experience with atmospheric, geospatial, or sensor data systems; familiarity with government cloud platforms (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government); background in systems programming, real-time data processing, or scientific computing; prior work in aerospace, defense, or climate tech; or active security clearance.
