Northwood Space is a space infrastructure company building a global network of phased array ground stations for satellite communications. The company designs, builds, and deploys scalable systems supporting national security, global connectivity, and disaster response missions.
You will lead Northwood's Cloud team, responsible for all cloud services, orchestration of the global ground station network, and the data plane routing gigabits to terabits per second of data worldwide. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will set technical direction, mentor engineers, and drive execution of cloud platform initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the Cloud team: setting technical direction, mentoring engineers, and owning end-to-end delivery of cloud services
- Designing and developing the cloud-based booking and reservation system for global antenna network access
- Building and maintaining customer-facing APIs and portals for scheduling, booking, and automated network rerouting
- Implementing sophisticated workflows that provide strong guarantees to customers and optimize resource utilization across deployed sites
- Owning the orchestration layer coordinating antenna operations globally, including interfaces between cloud services and on-site ground systems
- Designing and operating the control plane, data plane, and telemetry delivery path for seamless hybrid cloud and on-premises integration
- Developing billing and metering systems that accurately track resource usage and generate invoices
- Driving design and implementation of comprehensive monitoring solutions for continuous platform uptime
- Collaborating with Ground, Data, site operations, and network operations teams to build a resilient global network
- Working with customers on secure, scalable interfaces for Telemetry, Tracking, and Control (TT&C) and payload data transfer
Required qualifications: 6+ years professional software development experience, 3+ years building and scaling cloud-based services and APIs in production, experience leading engineering teams or projects as a tech lead with a track record of mentoring and driving technical direction, experience with distributed scheduling systems or booking platforms, and proficiency in modern cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
Preferred qualifications include experience with Rust, Golang, Haskell, or similar languages; building global-scale customer-facing platforms with high reliability; defining service boundaries across hybrid environments; API design and access control; event-driven architectures; high-throughput data delivery or streaming pipelines; billing systems; simulation and modeling; Kubernetes and CI/CD; and satellite communications domain knowledge.
