Beacon AI is building an AI platform to make flying safer, more efficient, and more capable, backed by top investors with a dozen Department of Defense contracts and partnerships with major airlines. The company operates as small, focused teams that own what they build, ship quickly, and learn fast. As a Lead Software Engineer for Advanced Pilot Assistant Software, you will design and build autonomy, robotics, and embedded systems that operate in real-world, safety-critical aviation environments. You'll develop and deploy robotic and embedded software powering advanced pilot assistance systems in production, owning autonomy-related features or subsystems from concept through deployment with a strong focus on reliability and performance. Key responsibilities include writing and maintaining high-quality Python and C++ code across autonomy, systems, and embedded components; integrating software with hardware, sensors, and perception or data ingestion pipelines to support autonomous and operator-in-the-loop decision-making; optimizing software for edge compute environments while managing CPU/GPU usage and latency; leading testing, validation, and deployment efforts to meet safety-critical requirements; and mentoring engineers while contributing to technical direction through design reviews and code reviews. You'll need 5+ years designing and deploying robotic software and/or embedded systems in production, strong C++ and/or Python skills with systems-level or embedded programming experience, and hands-on experience with embedded or edge compute platforms. Experience building real-time or interactive systems supporting time-sensitive user decisions, familiarity with autonomy systems (planning, decision-making, reasoning), and proven ability to deliver complex systems end-to-end in fast-moving environments are essential. Bonus qualifications include safety-critical or mission-critical systems experience (aviation or robotics), familiarity with ROS or DDS, experience supporting human operators in the loop or real-time control systems, and background in advanced mobility and autonomy. This is a hybrid role based in San Carlos, CA, requiring 3+ days per week onsite. The company offers comprehensive healthcare (100% employee medical premiums, 25% dependent coverage), 3 weeks PTO plus 13+ paid holidays, and 401(k). Due to U.S. export control regulations, only U.S. Persons can be hired; no visa sponsorship available.
