Saris AI is an applied AI startup building agentic systems for the banking industry, tackling a $100B+ automation problem. The company has shipped production agents handling real customer workflows and is scaling rapidly with a growing customer base. As Machine Learning Engineering Lead, you will own and lead the ML/AI function end-to-end, setting technical direction and standards across the company. Key responsibilities include architecting and guiding development of multi-modal, agentic AI systems that power real-world workflows; defining and overseeing evaluation frameworks, datasets, and performance metrics to continuously improve agent quality; driving productionization of ML systems with focus on reliability, scalability, and compliance; and building and mentoring a high-performing ML team while establishing best practices across modeling, experimentation, and deployment. You bring 8+ years of ML/AI engineering experience, including time as a technical lead or manager. You have a proven track record of leading ML initiatives end-to-end from problem definition through production deployment. Deep experience with LLMs and/or agentic systems in real-world, customer-facing applications is essential. You demonstrate strong ML fundamentals (deep learning, transformers, model evaluation, tradeoffs) and have scaled ML systems in production with expertise in monitoring, iteration, and reliability. You are comfortable leading engineers, influencing architecture decisions, and driving technical direction in early-stage, ambiguous environments with high ownership. Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex ML concepts into clear decisions are required. Bonus experience includes building agentic systems, orchestration layers, or long-context reasoning systems; comfort across the full stack (data, modeling, infra, APIs); work with both open-source and closed LLMs including fine-tuning or RAG systems; and a strong product mindset focused on real-world impact. The company offers competitive compensation with premium benefits and equity, the opportunity to work with repeat YC founders (successful Ready Education exit), and the chance to tackle ambiguous technical challenges with no clear answers in a fast-growing, well-funded environment.
