IonQ is seeking a Lead Integrated Photonics Simulation and Layout Engineer to join its quantum computing platform team in Boston. The role focuses on designing and laying out state-of-the-art photonic integrated circuits that support IonQ's quantum computing systems.
Key responsibilities include leading component design and layout for photonic device development with commercial foundries, building parameterized component cell (PCell) libraries with EPDA support, and creating automated layout workflows. You will support design and layout for quantum photonic technologies including diamond photonics, thin-film lithium niobate, and ion trap photonics platforms. The role involves owning full-reticle tapeouts from floorplanning through GDS generation, performing physical verification (DRC, LVS), and leading layout reviews. You will partner with internal fabrication and test teams to validate PDK components against measured device performance.
Required qualifications include a PhD in electrical engineering, physics, or related field (or equivalent experience), with demonstrated experience designing devices in diamond photonics, thin-film lithium niobate, or ion trap photonics platforms. You must be proficient with photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, Tidy3D, or COMSOL. Extensive hands-on experience generating layout for integrated photonic circuits is essential, including ownership of full-reticle tapeouts with commercial foundries. Deep expertise with Python-based photonic layout tools (KLayout, gdsfactory, Luceda IPKISS) and PDK development is required.
