Pennylane is a high-growth French fintech (€400M raised, 1,200+ employees, 4.9/5 Glassdoor rating) building financial management software for European SMEs and accounting firms. The company is preparing to launch its own regulated payment entity in mid-2027 and is building its first compliance and fraud operations team from the ground up.
As Transaction Monitoring & Fraud Operations Lead, you will be one of the first operational leaders in this greenfield setup, reporting to the Head of FinCrime Operations. You will own end-to-end first-line transaction monitoring and fraud operations for Pennylane's business customers, including alert triage, investigations, customer outreach, and escalations to Compliance and Risk.
Key responsibilities:
- Own first-line transaction monitoring and fraud operations, ensuring alert triage, investigations, and escalations follow policies and SLAs set by Compliance and Risk.
- Translate AML/CFT and fraud policies into operational procedures, decision trees, and analyst playbooks; provide evidence-based recommendations on alert quality and bottlenecks.
- Review complex or high-risk alerts, oversee post-onboarding fraud cases, and ensure escalations, complaints, and law-enforcement requests are handled with complete, auditable records.
- Implement QA and reporting frameworks; monitor operational and risk indicators; support Compliance during controls testing, audits, and regulatory reviews.
- Recruit, onboard, and lead the transaction monitoring and fraud analyst team with hands-on coaching, rigour, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Establish performance and capacity frameworks covering SLAs, productivity, quality, backlogs, false-positive rates, and hiring needs.
- Partner with Product and Tech to test and improve transaction-monitoring, fraud, and back-office workflows, prioritizing automation while identifying controls that should remain manual.
In the first 6–12 months, you will deliver approved operating procedures, analyst playbooks, and escalation rules before go-live; establish a capacity and hiring plan based on alert volumes and handling times; validate that alert queues, evidence collection, account measures, and second-line handovers work operationally; and ensure first-line monitoring is operational for new customers with trained coverage, agreed SLAs, documented QA controls, and named escalation owners.
This is a high-autonomy role with direct exposure to a strategic regulatory project and close collaboration with Product, Compliance, and Risk. You will help shape how Pennylane protects the financial activity of French SMEs as it brings more regulated operations in-house.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Significant experience in transaction monitoring, fraud, or broader financial-crime operations within a regulated financial-services environment, including ownership of operational performance and complex case decisions.
- Proven experience leading and developing an operational team responsible for alert queues or investigations, combining effective coaching with a hands-on player-coach approach.
- Strong understanding of first-line alert handling: triage, investigation, typology, escalation, and the distinction between fraud and AML cases.
- Good working knowledge of French and European AML/CFT expectations, including ACPR and TRACFIN requirements, and experience translating policy into SOPs, decision trees, and analyst guidance.
- Experience working with Product or Tech on workflow or tooling changes.
- Sound judgement on what to automate, what to sample, and what to escalate.
- Ability to use operational metrics to manage quality, backlogs, and capacity.
- Ability to make structured, well-documented decisions under pressure and communicate complex cases clearly to operational and compliance stakeholders.
- Comfort building operations in a greenfield environment where volumes are uncertain and tooling is evolving.
- Fluent French and English (mandatory).
- Based in France with strong preference for Paris; regular on-site presence expected; partial remote possible but not fully remote.
- Advantageous: exposure to ACPR expectations, a licensing programme, a BaaS migration, or law-enforcement requests.
