xAI is building AI systems to understand the universe. The High Power Engineering team is scaling electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses, and this role leads the transmission and distribution function.
As Lead Engineer for Transmission & Distribution, you will own the complete electrical infrastructure from generation terminals through medium-voltage distribution for a Memphis-based AI campus. This includes high-voltage switchyard architecture (GIS vs. AIS decisions, bus configuration, fault-current management), utility interconnection processes with local distributors and balancing authorities, and campus protection philosophy. You will establish the single source of truth for power systems studies (load flow, short circuit, coordination, arc flash, stability) and own the generation electrical interface (excitation, governor behavior, synchronizing, generator protection, black start, station service).
Key responsibilities include leading the interconnection process with utilities and ISOs (applications, system impact studies, protection alignment, metering, service agreements), managing regulatory compliance (NERC/SERC standards, air permitting, AHJ relationships), and owning the campus electrical safety program (NFPA 70E, arc-flash studies, energized work permitting, qualified-worker training). You will direct a growing team including Design, Operations/Build, Protection & Controls, and Power System Engineer roles as they are filled.
Required: Bachelor's in electrical engineering or related discipline, 10+ years in transmission/substation/generation interconnection engineering focused on high-power, high-voltage systems, and proven experience carrying projects through utility interconnection to energization. Preferred: PE license or active pursuit, knowledge of IEEE C37, IEEE 80, NESC, and NERC standards, experience at 161+ kV (GIS/AIS), large-load interconnection experience with TVA or municipal utilities, proficiency with power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, ASPEN, Matlab), and demonstrated ability leading multidisciplinary teams.
The role is based in Memphis, TN (not remote or hybrid) with up to 25% travel for factory testing, vendor engagement, and supporting other sites. You must be willing to work hands-on in all environments (heat, cold, rain, heights), extended hours/weekends during construction and energization, and provide 24/7 on-call emergency support. Valid driver's license required.
