Halter is a climate-tech company revolutionizing sustainable grazing management through hardware, software, and AI. The company enables farmers to optimize pasture management and animal welfare using IoT-enabled collars and intelligent decision-making systems, eliminating traditional constraints like quad bikes and fencing.
As a Lead Engineer, you'll tackle the hardest technical problems across Halter's integrated system. The role is a senior individual contributor position—you won't manage people, but you'll mentor and elevate engineers through collaboration, code reviews, and knowledge sharing. You'll own architectural decisions, write production code that sets the standard for quality, and drive reliability across your domain with on-call ownership.
Key responsibilities include: shipping robust, thoughtful work at a level few can match; making critical architectural calls and backing them with code; setting standards for clean, observable, easy-to-evolve systems; supporting other engineers through design conversations and generous context sharing; evolving testing strategies, CI/CD workflows, and infrastructure patterns; owning reliability and performance of your services end-to-end; and developing deep domain knowledge by getting out on farms.
The problems you'll solve span the full stack: turning billions of sensor events into calm farmer decisions; modeling the physical world (animals, pasture, terrain) for real-time action; building mobile and web experiences that work in harsh field conditions; designing platforms and pipelines that scale with growth; and engineering against constrained hardware, flaky rural connectivity, and physical-world messiness.
You should have years of experience shipping complex production systems, stay calm under pressure with low ego, think like a product engineer, use AI tools effectively, have grown other engineers through collaboration (not management), thrive in fast-moving ambiguous environments, and have cloud experience (AWS preferred). A software engineering degree is nice but not essential. Depending on your stack focus (frontend/mobile, backend, full stack, or platform), specific skills like React/React Native, REST APIs, distributed systems, databases, Node.js, Kotlin, Go, AWS, and Terraform are valued.
