Salary: CAD 186,000 - 236,000 / annual
Xero is seeking a Lead Engineer to shape the technical foundation for its Payments Platform, a critical initiative powering money movement across the ecosystem. You will guide the design and development of reliable, scalable, performant, and secure backend services while making foundational architectural decisions with visible impact on the future of small business financial management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building payment platform capabilities such as orchestration, risk & fraud management, and multi-provider integration to accelerate product development
- Building a global bill payment product to streamline cash flow management for small businesses
- Developing core high-throughput platform services capable of supporting millions of subscribers
- Integrating and championing AI capabilities to enhance engineering productivity and developer workflows
- Contributing directly to production code, proof-of-concepts, and technical deep dives
- Setting technical direction, mentoring engineers, and fostering an inclusive engineering culture
- Partnering cross-functionally with Product, Design, Security, Risk, and Operations teams to translate complex business needs into resilient solutions
The Payments Platform team is highly collaborative, valuing technical excellence, inclusion, and continuous innovation. You will work in a hybrid model (1-2 days per week in the Vancouver office) with flexibility to work remotely while joining for "boost days" focused on complex problem-solving and team collaboration.
Requirements:
- Proven track record delivering highly available, distributed backend systems and designing high-throughput services under real-world constraints
- Deep understanding of system architecture, API design, and both SQL and NoSQL databases
- Proficiency in modern backend stacks (C#, Java, Golang, or C++) and cloud-native platforms like AWS
- Passion for staying hands-on with production code and technical deep dives
- Strong leadership capabilities with ability to set technical direction and mentor engineers
- Ability to break down complex problems into clear, actionable solutions and drive agile execution
- Strong partnership skills across cross-functional teams
- Champion of advanced AI tools and practices to accelerate development workflows
- Tech stack agnostic; adjacent technology experience considered
