Bitwarden is a leading open-source password management solution used by individuals and enterprises worldwide. The company is building out an India Engineering Center of Excellence and seeking a Lead Engineer to own the technical direction of the Passkeys team.
In this role, you will lead the engineering effort for Bitwarden's WebAuthn and FIDO2 credential provider implementation across browser, desktop, and mobile platforms. You will own the team's technical domain, design and maintain the Rust-based implementation of these standards, and integrate with each platform's credential provider APIs. Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and maintain WebAuthn/FIDO2 implementation in Rust, including credential creation, assertion, and storage within an end-to-end encrypted vault
- Integrate passkey implementation with platform credential provider surfaces across browser, desktop, and mobile clients
- Participate in hands-on design and development of the shared Rust SDK, including language bindings and FFI consumed across all Bitwarden clients
- Implement and shape emerging standards for credential portability and secure import/export between providers
- Build interoperability testing against real-world relying parties, browsers, and platforms
- Maintain the technical roadmap with your manager, ensuring platform dependencies are current and emerging technologies are evaluated
- Unblock and support other engineers on the team
- Collaborate with other Tech Leads on cross-team technical alignment
- Serve as the team's representative in technical discussions and speak authoritatively about the domain
- Set the standard for thorough code reviews and knowledge sharing
- Occasionally review and approve bug fixes from the user community
This is a foundational opportunity to shape Bitwarden's India Engineering COE while working on critical security infrastructure used globally.
**REQUIREMENTS:**
- 8+ years of experience as a lead or team lead
- Experience designing and implementing complex user interaction flows in Angular applications and native OS (Windows, macOS, Linux), including developing against native OS APIs
- Expertise in developing and maintaining production Rust components, including design and application of libraries, language bindings, and FFI
- Experience implementing a standard or protocol from its specification, with discipline in reading specs closely, handling edge cases, and testing against real-world implementations
- Working knowledge of applied cryptography—ability to reason about public key cryptography, signatures, and key handling
- Rigorous approach to correctness; writes readable, testable code with careful consideration of failure modes in security-sensitive software
- Bias for long-horizon thinking to ensure decisions build stable, maintainable tooling
- Experience on a Platform team where other teams are your customers
- Experience using AI tooling in development and testing workflows (Anthropic Claude preferred)
- Collaborative and adaptable mindset with excellent communication skills
- Passion for open source and internet security
- Strong problem-solving skills
