Salary: CAD 186,000 - 236,000 / annual
Join Xero's Accounting Core Team as a Staff Engineer focused on solving large-scale engineering problems and influencing platform architecture. You will move beyond feature delivery to drive the modernization of complex systems, refactoring monolithic components into distributed, scalable architectures that serve millions of global users.
In this role, you'll have autonomy to make major code design decisions and contribute to global engineering standards. You'll balance technical excellence with mentorship, coaching engineers through complex technical challenges and helping them grow their skills. The team prioritizes continuous learning and mastery, with frequent code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions to maintain high technical standards.
Key focus areas include modernizing systems through refactoring, enhancing developer experience via CI/CD maturation and TDD practices, building and maintaining a diverse tech stack (C#, .NET, React, AWS, Kubernetes), and developing technical solution designs aligned with long-term engineering frameworks.
You'll work in a collaborative environment with engineers, product owners, and designers using agile delivery practices. The role is based in Vancouver with a hybrid working model that balances remote flexibility with purposeful in-person collaboration.
Required qualifications: proven experience delivering and operating complex, large-scale distributed/high-availability systems with strong fundamentals and ability to ramp quickly across adjacent technologies; growth mindset and passion for maintaining and sharing technical knowledge; background designing and building high-quality software across multiple languages and tools; ability to lead major code design decisions and contribute to wider technical solutioning; experience with modern engineering practices including automated testing, refactoring, and agile delivery; enjoyment of mentoring other engineers; deep care for technical excellence and drive to solve large-scale engineering challenges.
