DeWarmte develops technology to help homes transition away from gas heating through advanced heat pump systems. The company combines hardware, embedded control software, cloud services, and data analytics to deliver high-performance products. You will take ownership of two critical technical foundations: the control software that operates the heat pumps and the data platform that monitors, understands, and improves product performance. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will initially spend most of your time writing code, diagnosing real-world behavior, improving reliability, and delivering new functionality. You will also lead collaboration with external partners, ensure data reliability and scalability, and build the technical foundations and documentation needed to move the company away from dependence on individual engineers. Key responsibilities include: **Control Software Ownership**: Work directly in production code controlling heat pumps. Design, build, test, and deploy new control functionality. Improve product performance, stability, safety, and energy efficiency. Diagnose complex behavior across software, electronics, sensors, hydraulics, and physical installations. Manage controlled software rollouts across new products and the installed fleet. Establish automated testing, simulation, observability, and release practices. Current stack includes Bash/Shell, Python, Kafka, Telegraf, and Influx. **Product Data Platform**: Take technical ownership of systems that collect, process, and expose data from connected smart heat pumps. Make product behavior and fleet trends observable for engineering, service, and product teams. Improve data quality, reliability, and accessibility. Ensure pipeline and server capabilities scale rapidly. Create foundations for performance analysis, remote diagnostics, and continuous improvement. Define clear interfaces between device software, cloud systems, customer apps, and internal tools. **Team Building**: Turn implicit knowledge into clear documentation, tooling, and repeatable practices. Design systems that other engineers can understand, test, and safely modify. Define roles and capabilities needed as the company scales. Recruit, onboard, and mentor controls, embedded-software, and data engineers. Introduce effective code reviews, technical decision-making, and shared operational ownership. Gradually transition from primary implementer to leading a capable team while remaining hands-on. You will collaborate closely with hardware, software, data, product development, assembly, installation, and service teams. You will resolve immediate customer and operational issues while protecting long-term platform quality. Success in the first months means understanding existing controls, data flows, and operational risks; independently maintaining and releasing current systems; identifying and prioritizing technical risks; and beginning to improve monitoring, documentation, and development practices. As the role develops, new functionality will be delivered predictably and safely, product data will support faster diagnosis and better decisions, critical systems will be understood by multiple people, and a small, strong team will be in place with clear ownership. **Requirements:** - Strong hands-on software engineering experience, including ownership of production systems - Experience developing control or embedded software for physical products, machines, or connected devices - Track record of taking functionality through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and real-world operation - Ability to reason across software, hardware, and physical-system behavior - Experience with telemetry, time-series data, data pipelines, or connected-device platforms - Strong engineering fundamentals: version control, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, structured incident resolution - Ability to create clarity in developing systems and processes - Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices - Ambition and ability to recruit and lead a team while remaining highly hands-on - Valuable but not required: experience with heat pumps, HVAC systems, safety-critical design, fleet-management systems, or optimization
