LangChain is seeking an Applied AI Engineer for their NYC office to lead technical projects end-to-end while mentoring other engineers on the team. The Applied AI team builds reference agents and internal systems that demonstrate what's possible with LangChain's platform, including projects like Open SWE, Open Canvas, and Deep Research agents used by developers across the community.
In this hands-on role, you will design, implement, and deploy end-to-end AI workflows and agents solving real problems across multiple business domains. You'll develop and iterate on agent architectures, evaluation pipelines, and performance frameworks to ensure reliability and measurable outcomes. You're expected to set the technical bar for the team on code quality, testing, documentation, and project scoping, while mentoring engineers through code review and design discussions.
You'll work directly with customers and internal stakeholders to translate requirements into technical plans, identify gaps in internal tooling and frameworks, and drive enhancements. This includes communicating technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, and collaborating cross-functionally with Marketing, GTM, Recruiting, and Product teams to identify opportunities for agent-driven automation.
Required qualifications include 4+ years of software engineering experience with direct production experience building and deploying LLM-powered applications or agents. You should have experience leading technical projects end-to-end and mentoring engineers, hands-on experience implementing evaluation and monitoring systems, and deep understanding of AI system components including prompting, retrieval, orchestration, inference APIs, and model selection. Strong coding skills in Python or TypeScript (ideally both) are essential, along with excellent communication abilities and comfort thriving in a fast-moving startup environment.
Nice-to-have qualifications include expertise with LangChain or LangGraph and experience building or maintaining open source projects. The role is based onsite in New York, NY.
