In this role, you'll build and maintain backend services in the NetOps team's OCPP and charge point domain, handling protocol processing, message handling, device state management, and hardware vendor integrations. You'll own projects like OCPP hardening (fixing vendor quirks, malformed messages, connection issues), shift the team from reactive incident response to proactive prevention through observability and alerting, and advance standards work (OCPP 1.6, OCPP 2.0.1, OCPI) that other services depend on.
Key responsibilities include debugging field-only issues (e.g., a charge point in Belgium disconnecting every 40 minutes—you'll analyze OCPP traffic, reproduce against emulators, and fix), improving observability and alerting infrastructure, automating manual work as the network scales, and participating in on-call rotation with a team focused on system improvement rather than heroics. You'll collaborate across Product, Support, and operations teams.
Tech stack: Kotlin services (JVM), Java, PHP/Laravel monolith, OCPP 1.6/2.0.1 and OCPI protocol handling, Kafka for event-driven work, Prometheus/Grafana/OpenSearch for observability, AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
You should have 1–4 years of backend engineering experience or a strong junior track record with production exposure. Comfort with JVM languages (Kotlin preferred, Java acceptable) is essential; willingness to touch PHP when needed. You genuinely enjoy debugging (logs, traces, packet-level analysis), take ownership of your work into production, and communicate clearly. Nice-to-haves include curiosity about physical systems, EV/charging domain knowledge, IoT/embedded systems experience, event-driven architecture familiarity, and infrastructure-as-code exposure.
